The Week in Football: Fleetwood Shock Arsenal, Brighton Win at City and Arsenal Take Anfield – 2 November 2026

Fleetwood Town knocked the Premier League champions out of the Carabao Cup, Brighton won at the Etihad for the first time and Arsenal recovered from their midweek embarrassment by going top at Anfield. Norwich also fitted an entire comeback into 17 second-half minutes.

Fleetwood send the champions out

League Two Fleetwood Town beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury on Tuesday. The teams were 84 places apart in the football pyramid, but Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' penalty before 19-year-old Conor Haughey scored the winner.

The night also paused after 90 seconds because a drone appeared over the ground. Arsenal eventually found an equaliser through Viktor Gyökeres, Max Dowman was sent off late on and Fleetwood held their nerve in the shootout.

The EFL report confirms Fleetwood reached the quarter-finals for the first time. They then beat Bristol Rovers 3-1 in League Two on Saturday. A giant-killing on Tuesday and three points at the weekend is a decent few days for the Cod Army.

Arsenal answer at Anfield

Arsenal responded by beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday. Kai Havertz finished Declan Rice's cross in the 16th minute, and Mikel Arteta's side protected the lead without allowing Liverpool a shot on target after the break.

It was Arsenal's first league win at Anfield in 14 years and their sixth clean sheet in nine league matches. The result moved them three points clear at the top after Manchester City lost on Saturday. The Reuters match report has the details.

Brighton finally win at the Etihad

Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday, their first victory at the Etihad in the club's history. Yasin Ayari scored after 11 minutes, Lewis Dunk threw himself in front of two Erling Haaland efforts and Bart Verbruggen made the saves needed to finish the job.

The win came four days after Brighton had lost to City on penalties in the Carabao Cup. The club's official report recorded 3,044 Brighton supporters in the away end. They got the better version of Manchester this time.

Norwich fit a comeback into 17 minutes

Norwich City trailed Watford 2-0 at half-time after two Myron Boadu goals. Ben Chrisene pulled one back in the 54th minute, Anthony Musaba equalised in the 62nd and Paris Maghoma completed the turnaround in the 71st.

Three goals in 17 minutes turned half-time boos into a 3-2 win. Watford had done most of the difficult work, then watched it disappear before the second half was halfway through. Sky Sports has the full match report.

Salford make it eight in a row

Salford City beat Exeter City 2-1 to extend their winning league run to eight matches and move five points clear at the top of League Two. Will Aimson scored the winner from long range in the 88th minute, his first goal for the club.

Eight straight league wins is a serious run. Leaving the latest one until two minutes from time merely ensured everyone was still paying attention. The EFL round-up confirms the result and table.

Dates worth keeping clear
