Hull City took their tiger claws to Stamford Bridge, Tottenham completed another afternoon without troubling the scoreboard, and the Manchester derby needed a refereeing apology after the final whistle. Here are our favourite football moments from the last seven days.

Hull City keep mauling the Premier League

Newly promoted Hull City are still unbeaten after four league games. Their latest point came in a 2-2 draw at Chelsea, where Mohamed Belloumi scored twice and briefly had the Tigers heading for an even bigger result.

Chelsea needed a late João Pedro equaliser to rescue the draw. Hull left Stamford Bridge with eight points from their opening four matches and another reason for the claw celebration to appear in places that were probably not expecting it.

The wider football world met Mauled by the Tigers a few weeks ago. Hull have responded by giving everybody repeated opportunities to practise.

Tottenham complete four league games without a goal

Tottenham drew 0-0 with Everton on Saturday. That made it four league matches without scoring, the first time Spurs have started a league season that way in their history.

The drought has now passed 400 minutes. Everton had the better chances in the second half, while Tottenham supplied plenty of possession and very little danger. The first league 0-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium arrived at the exact moment nobody in north London wanted to collect it.

Spurs now travel to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. A goal would be useful. Two would probably cause a parade.

Ten-man Manchester City win a derby with an apology attached

Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford despite playing with ten men for more than an hour. Phil Foden was sent off in the first half, then Erling Haaland scored the winner after the break.

The goal survived a VAR check even though Enzo Fernández was standing offside and close to the ball. Pro Ref later admitted that VAR should have recommended an on-field review. United had a spare player, hit the woodwork twice and still finished the day with no points. The refereeing admission gave them something to win on Sunday evening, although the league table remains stubbornly uninterested.

Ipswich wait until the 90th minute at Selhurst Park

Ipswich won 3-2 at Crystal Palace through Zian Flemming’s 90th-minute goal. Palace had already gone down to ten men, lost a lead, recovered from 2-1 down and missed a major chance to win it before Flemming settled the afternoon.

Gary O’Neil celebrated his first winning visit to Selhurst Park while Ipswich ended a run of 23 league matches without a clean sheet in the least clean-sheet-shaped way possible.

Lewis Dunk scores from the next postcode

Brighton won 5-0 at Coventry on Sunday, with Lewis Dunk producing the goal everybody will remember. The centre-back struck from around 35 yards as Brighton turned a difficult opening spell into a very comfortable afternoon.

Coventry also had Taiwo Awoniyi sent off and became only the second Premier League side to lose their opening four games without scoring. Tottenham may have found company in the no-goal department, but Coventry have added four defeats for decoration.

Coming up: the football dates worth planning for

The next four weeks include a world champions’ visit to Wembley and two Premier League fixtures with very little need for extra publicity.

England v Spain, 26 September

England begin their UEFA Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday 26 September at 7.45pm. Spain arrive for their first match since winning the World Cup, while England return after finishing third.

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur, 10 October

Manchester United host Tottenham on Saturday 10 October at 5.30pm. Both clubs have already supplied enough early-season material for several months, so the international break may be the calmest part of the build-up.

Liverpool v Manchester City, 11 October

Liverpool welcome Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday 11 October at 4.30pm. It is the first league meeting between the sides this season and arrives straight after an extended international window, because apparently the fixture needed another variable.
